Shalestone Music: Why are you interested in performing in Japan?
Roly Skender: Japan’ s not all that far from Australia,
and when I asked the band what country would be a good place to tour, everyone
felt that Japan would be a good experience and give us a chance to make some
new fans.
SM: Do you have many Japanese friends in Australia?
RS: A few friends in western Australia, but I’ve always
enjoyed Japanese culture and this is my third time to visit Japan.
SM: Okay, so what aspects of Japanese culture are you most familiar with?
RS: Well we actually eat a lot of Japanese food, sushi & sashimi. But
when I come to Japan one thing that I really enjoy is the hot springs.
After the band comes and we can all enjoy the hot spring experience, maybe
we can try to take that back to Australia and start something there. I’m not sure if it would work in
Australia, but it’s a great experience here in Japan.
SM: You’ve been to Japan before, so what has impressed
you the most?
RS: There's been so many: Eating beef tongue in Sendai, volcanic hot springs
in Hokkaido, hiking in the Japan Alps, eating green tea ice cream for the
first time.
SM: Do you have any particular goals for the band “Roly
Skender & The Tonics?”
RS: We’re in the process of recording our first album
as a band and hope to have that finished by the end of the year. We’d also like to be able to tour Asia more frequently. We’re more interested in places like Japan than bigger markets like
America or England because it’s closer and seems more
fun.
SM: What is fun and interesting about you guys? Why should people come out and
see “Roly Skender & The Tonics” this summer in Japan?
RS: People can come out and see us enjoying what we do best, playing fun music.
We like to jump around a lot and we really get into what we’re doing. Also, Australia is a fairly isolated country, so the music
we play is very unique in it’s own way. We hope people in Japan come out so we can share a happy time
together. I think that people will really enjoy it.
SM: Can we expect any surprises?
RS: There might be. We may decide to incorporate a traditional Japanese
instrument in our show somehow…maybe.
SM: Great!! Looking forward to it.
RS: Thank you.
