SM: ライブコンサートはよくやっているのですか。
AS: はい。現在は前より多いですね。大学の時に、友人は私に「自分の作ったＣＤが出来たよ」とよく言われたけど、その時自分の中心は勉強することだった。でも、卒業後自分の音楽が中心と成って、大変嬉しいです。

SM: ライブはどこでやっているのですか。
AS: ライブはほとんど大阪と神戸のジャズクラブです。大阪のRug Timeと三宮のGreat Blueなど。また、私のバンド以外には、他のバンドかホテルにある個人的なパーテイでも歌います。

SM: あなたのバンドのライブショーはどんな雰囲気ですか。
AS: 昔、歌を始める時、クラシック音楽を歌って、ジャズに移った。それで、作曲はいろいろな影響されたものだから、ライブの時に、面白い音楽の種類が出てくると思います。演奏曲目はジャズとソウル曲だけではなく、たまにレゲーとカリビアン曲を入れる。全体で、ライブショーは聴衆に違う文化と経験の旅をすると思いますね。

SM: 日本の影響は表れますか。
AS: そうですね。「Oooh, boy」という曲を作って、英語と日本語の歌詞を歌っているから、結構人気のある曲です。

SM: バンドの楽器は何ですか。
AS: 基本的にベース、ギターとドラムですが、サックスとトリニダードの伝統的な楽器スチールパンドラムもあります。

SM: そうですか。スチールパンのドラマーはだれですか。
AS: 彼は日本人ですね。彼は何回もトリニダードに行って、楽器のことについて教えてもらった。凄才能がある人です。

SM: 現在、売っているＣＤなどはありますか。
AS: 今、作曲中だから、曲はまだ録音されてないですけど。近未来にスタジオで録音する。

SM: 次のライブはいつですか。
AS: ６月１４日、三宮のGreat Blue です。皆さん、来てね。

Shalestone Music: Where are you from originally?
Alicia Saldenha: I'm originally from the Republic of Trinidad in Tobago, (Caribbean) and I lived there for most of my life.

SM: How long have you been in Japan?
AS: I studied for a while in Wales and then I moved to Japan 8 years ago as a research student in foreign languages. I was also singing when I began my research here so I decided to pursue a graduate degree in ethnomusicology. I graduated a year ago, so now I'm concentrating on my own music and performing.

SM: Can you describe your music in 1 short sentence?
AS: It's soulful and jazzy with some Caribbean sunshine.

SM: Sounds interesting.
AS: Yes, maybe you could call it "a colorful blend of music."

SM: Do you play live shows often?
AS: Now I'm playing more than before. When I was in school my musician friends would call me and say "I just finished my CD," and I felt helpless because I had to study and graduate. But now I'm finally doing my original music and I'm a lot happier.

SM: Where do you usually perform?
AS: Usually in Osaka and Kobe in jazz clubs like Rug Time or Great Blue. Also, aside from my band, I sometimes perform with other bands or do private functions in hotels or other venues.

SM: What kind of show can people expect to see when they go out to see you live?
AS: I think there's a lot of variety. When I first started singing, I learned classical music and then I went into jazz, so the music I write has many influences. I have many jazzy songs, but I also have more soulful ones and every now and then I'll put in a reggae/Caribbean song. So I think overall my show is a musical journey, taking the audience to different places and providing different experiences.

SM: Do you add any Japanese influences?
AS: Actually, I have one song that has both English and Japanese lyrics, "Oooh Boy." That's been a really big hit with audiences.

SM: What is the band's instrumentation?
AS: The main instruments are bass, guitar and drums, but I also have someone who plays steel pan, the national instrument in Trinidad, as well as alto sax.

SM: Your steel pan player is…..
AS: Actually, he's Japanese. He's been to Trinidad many times and has learned a lot about the instrument. A really talented guy.

SM: Do you have any music for sale?
AS: Not at the moment, but I'm writing and hopefully will be able to record in the near future.

SM: When is your next live show?
AS: June 14, at Great Blue in Sannomiya. Come out and enjoy.
